    1. Repertoire

    Candidates must perform three contrasting pieces from the Trinity Grade 8 repertoire, ensuring at least one piece from each group.

    Focus areas include:

    • Advanced technical control and articulation.
    • Interpretation of complex phrasing and dynamic shaping.
    • Expressive performance with stylistic accuracy.

     

    2. Exercises: Candidates prepare three technical exercises, selecting one from each of the three prescribed groups.


    3. Music Theory

    • Understanding and composing using major, minor, pentatonic major, pentatonic minor, blues, whole-tone scales, and serial tone rows.
    • Recognizing and applying Aeolian, Dorian, and Mixolydian modes.
    • Analysing Romantic piano and orchestral compositions.
    • Understanding instrumental ranges and orchestration techniques.
    • Composing a 12- or 16-bar melody using various scales and modal structures.
       

    4. Scales & Arpeggios
     

    Scales (Four octaves, hands together – played f, mf, p, or crescendo/diminuendo with legato or staccato articulation) •

    • F#, Eb, and B major
    • F#, Eb, and B minor (harmonic & melodic)
    • Chromatic scales in similar motion starting on F#, Eb, and B
       

    Scales (Two octaves, hands separately)

    • B major scale in 3rds
    • C harmonic minor scale in 3rds
       

    Arpeggios (Four octaves, hands together)

    • F#, Eb, and B major & minor
    • Diminished 7ths starting on F#, Eb, and B
    • Dominant 7ths in the keys of F#, Eb, and B
       

    Contrary Motion Scales (Two octaves)

    • Eb major contrary motion
    • F# minor contrary motion

     

    5. Transposing melody

    • Practice transposing melodies up or down any major, minor, or perfect interval within an octave, including transposing a tune up or down a perfect 4th or 5th (within the keys for the grade) or for a transposing instrument.
    • Master transposing melodies for both standard and transposing instruments, ensuring accurate pitch shifts and retention of musical expression within the grade’s key range.

    6. Aural Skills

    • Identify time signature, key modulations, including distant and chromatic shifts.
    • Detect rhythmic and melodic changes in complex excerpts.

     

    7. Preparation Tips

    • Break down large repertoire pieces into smaller sections and practice each section slowly before combining them.
    • Practice hands separately first to build accuracy and coordination before playing hands together.
    • Focus on dynamic markings and articulation, ensuring contrast and clarity in expression.
    • Be expressive and engage with the music, using natural phrasing and shaping to bring out the character of each piece.
    • Maintain a relaxed posture and positive body language to enhance musical flow and make performances more enjoyable.
    • Master technical fluency with Hanon No. 1–39, exploring different touches (legato, staccato).

  • Demonstrate virtuosic technique, expressive phrasing, and advanced musical interpretation.
  • Perform a diverse repertoire with stylistic and historical awareness.
  • Develop aural perception and sight-reading skills for professional-level performance.
  • Be fully prepared to successfully appear for the Trinity Grade 8 Piano Examination
